Execs: Minaya May Not Have Control Of Mets

Posted by Steve Sidoti

According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, Omar Minaya may not be the man in charge of making baseball decisions for the New York Mets, or at least without definite approval. Peter Gammons mentioned this a few weeks ago, but Sherman was able to dig a bit deeper.

On the subject of Minaya, Sherman writes..

"Rival executives and agents described a man not fully in charge of baseball operations regardless of what Mets ownership says. One NL official said that lag time between discussing business with Minaya and the time it took him to respond suggested he had to run the information through a committee."

“You might not like what Omar had done in the past, but he was always aggressive and decisive," an agent told Sherman. "He looked old, beaten and without a plan this time.”

Sherman then goes on to say...

"Executives and agents said they thought Minaya has yet to be told a true budget by ownership, and that is leading to the belief that the Mets do not want to spend big. A second agent said, “The Mets are not a destination spot right now, especially if you are a hitter. You would be going to a questionable team playing in a huge park. So if you’re Jason Bay, why would you leave the Red Sox for the Mets unless you were blown away (financially), or if you were Matt Holliday, why would you leave St. Louis for the Mets unless you were blown away?”

Stay tuned as the Mets may or may not address the report. Regardless, it is safe to say that this off-season is the most important for the Mets in recent history. There really is no room for problems such as these, and not only are the fans confused about where this off-season is headed, but so are baseball executives.

this is nothing new jr. wilpon is the g.m. so don,t expect holiday , or bay or lackey and roy halliday i do believe they will bring in players and they will be good. but it won,t put us over the top to overtake the phillies so what,s the point of us getting pumped up about the winter meetings. the wilpons are just worried about there wallets not bringing us long suffering mets fans a championship .thats what seperates us from the yankees they go the extra mile to win. and this talk about maybe bringing delgado back if they can,t get what they want is really stupid .but it,s not like the wilpons were ever smart ...

Its sounds to me like Omar is pretty much a lame duck, or a figure head.
